ding-a-ling

ding-a-ling

driving with my boy today
we drove straight past the metro
and all the way to school in dc

AG driving
me sitting
me watching
me breathing

from last night,
a thought:
ding-a-ling
"who has the phone?"
"where's the phone?!"
a 21st century question

everyone on this list
grew up knowing where the phone was

ding-a-ling
the phone was where it always was
attached

so that's the thing for me right now
the ding-a-ling brought me to ... a cord
certain things are better attached

modern culture seems to tell me to free up
free up my hands
free up my time
"if you only do ...x...you will have more free-dom"
i don't think so

i don't feel so free with all my wireless things
isn't free - free to choose?
but with so many choices
worry slips in
oh no - which toothpaste?
oh no - which M&M's?
oh no oh no!

that's what i think
for me this morning
the little clicking of the rotary phone
the getting up to change the TV channel
reminds me of a better time

a little-er annick
a less frantic annick

for my poor little boy last night
the family's computer just couldn't upload something
oh no - it's old, poor computer thing
complaints begin

"it doesn't really even work mom, it keeps turning off, doesn't let me play what i want"
"i know honey, but it's good to be happy with what it does do"
he recognizes my routine and he says "i know i know i know, mom"

so we all try
try to make good choices with what's out there
try hard to find what works for us
try to be happy with what we have

and we hope
we hope that we'll know

which cords are best severed
and which ones are best attached.
